Kranjc’s Third Period Hat Trick Lifts Miami

Miami University used a record-tying three third period goals from senior Gregor Krajnc Friday night to overcome a sluggish first two periods of action and pick up a 3-2 win over the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

Krajnc broke a 2-2 tie with less just 38 seconds remaining in the contest, scoring the third of his three third- period goals on a breakaway with assists from Matt Medvecz and Bart Stevens. The goal tied a Miami record, shared by four others, for goals in a single period by an individual and gave Miami its first CCHA win of the season.

Miami trailed 1-0 after a sluggish first two periods of play, but Krajnc brought the Red and White back to life with a score in front of the net just 2:37 into the final period. Nick Jardine and Ken Marsch assisted on the game tying goal.

Krajnc struck again less than three minutes later, when he netted a power play goal that was set up by Derek Edwardson and Jason Deskins.

Nebraska Omaha’s Daniel Samuelsson evened the score at 7:15 to set up a wild final 12 minutes of action.

Earning the win in goal for Miami was David Burleigh, who stopped 21 Maverick shots enroute to his second consecutive win in net. UNO netminder Rodney McLeod absorbed his first loss of the season in goal, stopping 14-of -17 Miami shots.

For Krajnc, the hat trick, which was Miami’s first of the season and the second of his career, gave him a team-high six goals on the season. The late RedHawk barrage also ended a 10-game winless streak in the CCHA and gave Miami it’s first three-game winning streak in nearly a year.

Miami, which upped its record to 4-5-2 and 1-3-1 in the CCHA, and Nebraska Omaha, which tumbled to 6-5-0 and 3-4-0 in the CCHA, meet again Saturday night in Goggin Arena.
