Northeastern scored two goals in the third period to defeat visiting Princeton 3-2 Saturday at Matthews Arena in an ECAC game.
Princeton outshot NU 48-23, but Husky senior goaltender Erika Silva made a career-high 46 saves to frustrate the Tiger offense. Princeton led in shots 34-10 after two periods, but the score was tied 1-1.
Lisa Giovanelli began the scoring when she stuffed the puck in the net from the right post at 5:59 of the first. Andrea Kilbourne answered for Princeton with a wrist shot at 6:41. The score remained tied 1-1 until the third period.
Freshman Sara Mahoney put back a rebound of an Erica Archambeau shot for her first collegiate goal at 4:38 of the third to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead. At 10:08 of the third, NUs Kathleen Savino skated around the Princeton net and fed Colleen Coen in front for the goal and a 3-1 Husky advantage. Princeton puled the goalie at 2:02 and it paid dividends when Abbey Fox scored a six-on-five goal at 19:21. But that was as close as Princeton would come.
Silva has now stopped 86 of 90 shots she has faced this season. NU improves to 3-0-0 and 1-0-0 in ECAC while Princeton dropped its season opener.
