Jaro Cesky had a six-point night with one goal and five assists, leading Augsburg to a 7-3 victory over St. Thomas in an MIAC game Saturday night at Augsburg Ice Arena. The game was the first of the season for both teams.
Cesky was one of several Auggies to have big season-opening games against the Tommies, the defending MIAC champions and NCAA Division III national runner-up. Playing in his first collegiate game, Tim Olsen scored a hat trick. Joe Johnson, on the same line as Olsen and Cesky, recorded five assists.
Nick Murray had two goals for the Auggies, and Brad Schwartzbauer notched a goal and an assist.
The Auggies won despite being outshot 43-32; St. Thomas had 18 shots in the third period alone. However, Ryan McIntosh made 40 saves in a strong performance in goal for the Auggies.
The Tommies were paced by Drew Palmgren, who had two of the team’s three goals. Jake Searles had the other St. Thomas goal.
Augsburg jumped out to a five-goal lead in the first period-and-a-half, with the team’s first line playing a part in each of the goals. St. Thomas rallied, but could not edge closer than three goals to the Auggies.
