Massachusetts blue liner Cale Makar is the odds-on favorite to win the Hobey Baker Award on Friday, but it was his defensive partner, freshman Marc Del Gaizo, who stepped into the spotlight against Denver.

Marc Del Gaizo scored on a slap shot 15:18 into overtime, giving Massachusetts a 4-3 victory over Denver on Thursday in the Frozen Four semifinals at KeyBank Center.
“We don’t have that experience, but that’s all right,” UMass coach Greg Carvel says. “We have a lot of other things I’m excited about.”
Providence, Minnesota Duluth, Massachusetts and Denver each took the ice at KeyBank Center on Wednesday.
