Much of the attention has gone to the race for the Hockey East regular season title, and deservedly so, but there’s also the race for one of the top five spots in the standings and its attendant first-round bye. Connecticut has put itself firmly in that race (photo: Melissa Wade).

In 32 seasons, Hockey East has never placed less than two teams in the NCAA tournament field. And while there is still a chance that three or four teams could possibly sneak into the field of 16, there is a very good possibility that Hockey East has just one NCAA entry (photo: Melissa Wade).

Hockey East announced Saturday that Northeastern sophomore defenseman Jeremy Davies has been suspended for one game stemming from an incident at 15:41 of the third period on Friday, Jan. 19, at Massachusetts. The latest team in the Hockey East driver’s seat is now Northeastern. Last weekend, the Huskies swept one of the hottest teams in hockey, Maine, to extend their own hot streak to 7-0-2 (photo: Melissa Wade).
Providence announced on Wednesday that defenseman Davis Bunz will join the team for the start of the second half. Bunz appeared in 18 games this fall with the USHL’s Central Illinois Flying Aces, totaling two goals and seven assists with plus-6 rating. Defenseman Collin Murphy will be joining Northeastern, starting with the Huskies’ game this Saturday night at home against American International. Murphy started the season with the USHL’s Muskegon Lumberjacks and compiled a goal and an assist in 21 games.
Arizona State has announced that the series-opening game against Boston University on Friday, Jan. 26, will be moved to Gila River Arena in Glendale, Ariz. – the home of the NHL’s Arizona Coyotes. Four current NCAA players have been named to Team Canada’s roster for the Spengler Cup, which will be held from Dec. 26-31 in Davos, Switzerland. It is the fifth and final tournament in which Team Canada will compete as it prepares for the 2018 Olympic Games in PyeongChang, South Korea. Boston College defenseman Michael Campoli has left the program for “other opportunities,” according to a school-issued press release sent out Tuesday afternoon. Campoli was a sophomore this season and played in 12 career games for the Eagles, finishing with a plus-7 rating and an assist. Eliteprospects.com reports Campoli has signed with the BCHL’s Penticton Vees.
Three NCAA standouts have been named to Canada’s National Junior Team roster for the 2018 World Junior Championship. Colgate goaltender Colton Point joins Boston University defenseman Dante Fabbro and UMass blueliner Cale Makar.
