Penalties are up, power play percentage is down, and some teams really are shorthanded. And Chris Lerch takes a look at Strength of Schedule.
Power Supply The NCAA’s Points of Emphasis (POE) have meant more penalties, and, as a result, more power plays. Special teams are more important than ever in college hockey. After some serious number crunching, I’ve uncovered the following: • Penalties are up, but you knew that. As of last Sunday, there were a total of … Read more
Atlantic Hockey commissioner Bob DeGregorio and Canisius athletic director Tim Dillon paid a weekend visit to Rochester Institute of Technology as part of that university’s bid to become a member of the league as early as the 2006-07 season. It’s been a busy week for RIT: players got hit by a stomach bug, they have to visit Hobart, and on Saturday, Atlantic Hockey pays a visit. Neumann is getting closer to the league, and Hobart introduces a Statesman with a big head.
Thanksgiving was tournament time, and the best of the tourneys ended in a shootout. A couple of preseason top 15 teams are on hard times, and another coach is close to the 400 mark and could get there this weekend.
A tie with Norwich — and the loss of the Primelink Tournament title in a shootout — was enough to take four first place votes away from Middlebury, but the Panthers hung on to the top spot in this week’s USCHO.com Division III men’s poll. Norwich is second in the poll, garnering three first-place votes, … Read more

Despite yet having played a game, Middlebury picked up three first-place votes and remained in the top spot in this week’s USCHO.com Division III men’s poll. Norwich claimed No. 2; the Cadets don’t hit the ice until next week. St. Thomas, with wins against St. Norbert and Lake Forest lifted the Tommies seven spots to No. 3, and garnered them the remaining two first-place votes.
Though it’s still early, some pivotal games were played last weekend; the MIAC does a little better against the NCHA; and once again, it’s time to retire some dubious traditions.
