UConn blueliner Masonius gives up senior season, signs AHL contract with Penguins affiliate

UConn junior defenseman Joseph Masonius has signed an AHL contract for the 2018-19 season with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

Masonius will join the Penguins immediately on an amateur tryout agreement for the remainder of the 2018 Calder Cup playoffs.

Masonius was a sixth-round selection (181st overall) by Pittsburgh in the 2016 NHL Draft.

During his three-year career at UConn, Masonius played in 96 games and recorded 50 points on 10 goals and 40 assists. He twice led all UConn defensemen in scoring.

This past season, he had 16 points on two goals and 14 assists and was a career-best plus-5 for the year.
