Mike Lockert, the play-by-play voice of Notre Dame hockey for the past seven years, died suddenly in his sleep earlier this morning.
According to an email sent by the University, there were no further details available at this time. The school said it will be providing an update when more information is available.
Lockert was a veteran of the radio business, having served as a radio announcer for the Huntington Blizzard of the East Coast Hockey League as well as having hosted several radio talk shows in his hometown of Los Angeles. He also hosted UCLA Bruins pre- and post-game talk shows, as well as the Los Angeles Clippers halftime report, and as had a stint as a national talk show host for Cable Radio Networks. He had also served as the media relations director for the South Bend Silver Hawks, the single-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamonbacks.
Lockert attended California State University of Los Angeles where he majored in broadcast communications.
Notre Dame faces Michigan State at home this evening at 7 p.m.
