Ryan Callahan had two points and Jake Dowell tallied two assists as the U.S. defeated Switzerland, 6-4, in its second game of World Junior Tournament action Monday.
The U.S. now holds a perfect 2-0 record in tournament play. The team faces off against Belarus on Wednesday, Dec. 29.
In a third period that saw eight goals scored in a span of seven minutes, the U.S. took a commanding lead, getting four goals in the session. Drew Stafford kicked off the frenzy before T.J. Hensick skated through two Swiss defensemen for 4-2, U.S. Robbie Schremp tallied the eventual game-winner, walking the puck out from behind the net before firing short-side.
All four goals were scored with in 3:33. Switzerland mounted a short comeback, tallying twice to bring the score to 5-4, but Patrick O’Sullivan wrapped the win with a shot through the five-hole with 13 minutes to play.
Callahan first got the U.S. team on the board at 9:36 of the first period, and Kevin Porter added a second score midway through the second. The Swiss team tied the game at the start of the third period, but held the tie for just 30 seconds.
In other tournament action Monday, Canada defeated Sweden 8-1. In games at the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Thief River Falls, Minn., Finland fell to Slovakia, 2-0 and Russia topped the Czech Republic, 4-1.
