The coaching fraternity is a close bond, but the ties that bind Tom Osiecki and Jason Lesteberg go much deeper than that. Now, these ties get tighter, as these two coaches both lead fledgling programs into a new season, and kick it off by facing each other.
Former St. Lawrence men’s and women’s ice hockey coach Bernie McKinnon died Sunday after a battle with bone cancer. The recent St. Lawrence Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, who was the men’s varsity coach from 1971-76, was considered a pioneer in women’s coaching.
Michael Barrett has been named the new women’s head coach at Sacred Heart. Barrett replaces Joy Woog, who became the interim head women’s coach at Northeastern on Sept. 14. Women’s hockey is about to get a major facelift, thanks to the announcement that the ECAC, at both the Division I and III level, will split and form two leagues for each division beginning in 2001-02.
