Who’s Number One?

Voters are going to have an interesting choice to make today when they set about picking the Number One Division III team in the nation. Plattsburgh, which has been on top of the poll for the past six weeks, lost to Skimore in its only action last week. Number Two UW-Superior also lost its only … Read more

2008 Turkey Tourneys

One of the many cool things about D-III hockey is the large number of holiday tournaments taking place (Division I has just two measly tourneys this weekend). Here’s a rundown of the action. Pack the Turkey sandwiches and catch some if you can: Primelink Great Northern Shootout When: November 28 & 29 Who: Middlebury (host), … Read more

What John Harrington is Up To

The former St. John’s coach and Miracle-on-Icer is head coach of Ambri-Piotta in the Nationalliga A. (Swiss Premier League). Check out the fans with the Che flag, etc. Plenty of shots of Harrington on the bench. And yes, it’s in Italian. They speak Italian in this part of Switzerland. httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQehVGGE1ig

Encore

Like all defending national champions, St. Norbert is looking to repeat. It’s easier said than done, unless you’re Middlebury, of course. Besides the Panthers’ incredible runs of three and five national titles, you have to go back to UW-Stevens Point in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s to find a team able to successfully defend … Read more

Hat’s Off

To St. Norbert, which finally broke through after so many close calls. Just a dominating defensive performance by the Green Knights, who never lost their poise. What can you say about Kyle Jones? Never before has a goalie not been scored on in a D-III Frozen Four. St. Norbert allowed just 43 goals this season … Read more

Time Ticking Away

…on Plattsburgh. We’re midway through the third period and the Cards are having trouble getting to the net. St. Norbert is 25-0-3 this season when leading after two periods. Of course, when you only lose one game all season, ya gotta figure…

After Two

St. Norbert leads 2-0 after two periods, with Marc Belanger getting the second SNC goal off a power-play rush with a nice wrist shot that beat Bryan Hince cleanly. The Green Knights weathered a five-minute hitting from behind major to Pete Fylling and will have 1:15 of 5×3 to start the third period. Plattsburgh came … Read more

One Period in the Books

And we’re still scoreless. Plattsburgh will start the period with 44 seconds of power play to work with. Both goaltenders came up big at times, including a big glove save from Bryan Hince on Marc Belanger with about 2:45 to go in the period.

I Hate TV Timeouts

We have one now. No score with 10:25 to play in the first. Plattsburgh had taken the play to the Green Knights early, but St. Norbert got a little momentum back in the last 2-3 minutes. Let’s see how the TV timeout affects that.

We’re Here….

…A little early. We got to the building at about 1:00 pm. Nobody here but the USCHO guys and the CSTV crew setting up for today’s broadcast. There were 5,625 people here yesterday, a great, great crowd. We beat the ECAC’s (4,851) in Albany (as well as Atlantic Hockey’s 3,900 and the CHA’s 1,100), quite … Read more

A Tale of Two Games

I had the opportunity to do color for the NCAA/CSTV broadcast of the St. Norbert – Norwich game, so I apologize for no updates. Tomorrow I will be liveblogging the championship game from start to finish. We’re currently in the second period of the second semifinal, and it’s been a very different game from the … Read more

We’re Here

I’m in the pressbox at Herb Brooks arena, taking it all in. There’s a youth game going on right now, as Lake Placid is a busy place this weekend, also hosting the big CAN-AM youth tournament. There are three rinks in Olympic Center – the Herb Brooks (1980) arena, the 1932 rink, and a practice … Read more

Site of Miracles, But Not This Year

The NCAA has to be happy with the four teams that made it to Lake Placid – the hottest team in Division III and three squads within a reasonable driving distance. They’ll be no miracle this year – all four teams can with the title. No Cinderellas allowed. St. Norbert – Is this finally the … Read more

Reaction Time

OK. The bids have gone out. Initial reactions: 1. Stout is a good choice. The Blue Devils got hosed last year, but this is more than a make-up call. 2. I hope the MCHA gets an auto-bid next year, so Adrian will have a real shot. Their strength of schedule killed them, and it won’t … Read more
