This Week in the CHA: Nov. 16, 2006

Rob Sirianni was born on Halloween 23 years ago, but throughout his minor, junior and college careers, the Bemidji State senior has never had to mask his offensive talent. Though he only has one goal through eight games, no one is worried. Not Sirianni. Not BSU head coach Tom Serratore. “When we need a goal, … Read more

I think I might just start deciding my weekly predictions with coin flips. That quarter can’t be any worse at it than I am. Once more, the home teams did me in. The host schools again failed to hold serve last weekend in what is traditionally a very home-friendly league. The visitors, as a collective, … Read more

Downtime The Mercyhurst Lakers had last weekend off, and coach Rick Gotkin can’t decide if that was a good thing or a bad thing. His team is off to a 2-6 start, and has had almost two weeks to dwell on an epic collapse at Sacred Heart, where the Lakers surrendered four goals in the … Read more

Off the Top of My Head • Two games, 16 goals and two ties? I thought that was crazy enough for the series between Minnesota and St. Cloud State, but a quick look at the box scores shows 15 different scorers! Congratulations to Minnesota’s Jay Barriball, the only one to find the back of the … Read more

The Sky Isn’t Falling Based on some reactions to Boston College’s 6-3 start, you’d think the Eagles are on the brink of disaster. While it’s true that there have been some surprising losses, most notably the lopsided scores in Notre Dame’s 7-1 win and Harvard’s 4-0 shutout, there isn’t a team in college hockey that … Read more

This Week in the CCHA: Nov. 16, 2006

Sure, They Can Beat the U.S. Armed Forces, but Can They Take the Spartans? It’s hard to avoid the cliché about smiling Irish eyes this season, since Notre Dame hockey has emerged from a Van Winkle-like slumber and found itself starting faster than it has since 1998-99, with an 8-1-1 record and No. 5 ranking. … Read more

November Musings

Notre Dame and its former head coach make headlines; Boston College goes up and down; Army opens eyes in Atlantic Hockey; and the WCHA adjusts after a newsworthy offseason. Dave Starman offers up his thoughts.

An Unwelcome Fame

Robbie Bina may best be known for suffering a hit from behind that sidelined the UND forward for over a year. Now Bina is back, and Todd D. Milewski finds he wants to keep the focus forward.

Despite suffering its first loss of the season, Maine hung onto the top spot in Monday’s USCHO.com/CSTV Division I men’s poll. The Black Bears, who beat Massachusetts-Lowell Friday before falling before an offensive explosion from New Hampshire Sunday, earned 22 first-place votes and 772 overall points this week, edging out Minnesota for No. 1. Turnover? Look No Further Than the CCHA I don’t know why everyone’s so excited about what happened Tuesday. Sure, sure, it’s been over a decade since power changed hands in the House and Senate, but don’t people realize that it’s been even longer since we’ve seen that kind of change in the CCHA? Where are … Read more

This Week in the ECACHL: Nov. 9, 2006

Wow, talk about a wild weekend. The home teams went 3-7-2 in league play, with no sweeps. RPI was the only home team to take three points this weekend, while traditional powers Dartmouth and Harvard shockingly dropped all four home games between them. Brown went blow-for-blow with visiting Colgate, and nearly doubled up the favored … Read more

Still Undefeated Going into last weekend, Boston College had just lost to Providence, Boston University to Massachusetts-Lowell, and New Hampshire to Massachusetts. With the Hockey East mantra of “toughest league top to bottom” being chanted in rinks throughout New England, you had to figure Maine had no chance against Merrimack. The Black Bears, however, had … Read more

Comeback College hockey is well known for dramatic comebacks. The wide-open nature of the game means that few leads are safe. But when Scott Champagne scored with 6:33 to play to give Mercyhurst a 4-0 lead over Sacred Heart on Saturday, it looked inevitable that the Lakers would put this one in the “W” column … Read more

The senior class at Robert Morris is a unique class in that all four members are transfers from other Division I schools. Three of those players — forwards Aaron Clarke and Doug Conley and defenseman Bryan Mills — came to the Colonials from fellow CHA institution Niagara. The other is goalie Joe Tuset, who came … Read more
