From the Sutters, Howes and Patricks, to the Stastnys, Ferraros and Kariyas, hockey seems to have more family ties than any other sport, with ubiquitous father-son and brother combinations. For plenty of evidence, look no further than North Dakota, home of the Fighting Sioux and five prominent pairs.
St. Cloud and Ohio State duke it out for the right to “home” ice at the WCHA tournament; and No. 3 Harvard completes an impressive trifecta. Zevi Gutfreund rolls through the week in women’s hockey.
Led by undefeated and top-ranked RIT, 54 teams remain in the hunt for the D-III national championship — but over half of those depart this weekend, as the playoffs ramp up. If Easterners thought Monday’s snow was bad, they don’t remember the Blizzard of ’78, which struck as that season’s Beanpot was beginning. After 23 years, memories are still fresh.

At 5-foot-10, Samuli Jalkanen may not look like your average defenseman. Guess what: he doesn’t play like an average defenseman, either. Michael Kobylanski goes up close with the UMass blueliner.
Almost from birth, Ryan Miller was destined to be a Michigan State Spartan. And sure enough, the scion of the famed Miller hockey family landed in East Lansing, where he’s now breaking goaltending records by the boatload. Paula C. Weston presents a hometown boy made good.
