The Buffalo State Bengals, perennial doormats in the SUNYAC since joining the league, find themselves with a 3-1 conference record (5-3 overall) and in a tie for second place after defeating the Potsdam State Bears, 4-3, at the Buffalo State Sports Arena. The Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets took advantage of solid penalty killing and superb goaltending to defeat their NCHA rivals, Wisconsin-River Falls, 3-1, for third place in the 2001 NCAA Frozen Four.
Plattsburgh scored three goals on its only three shots of the first period, then held off a furious Wisconsin-Superior comeback in the third for a 5-3 victory in the first semifinal game of the 2001 Division III Frozen Four. Once again, the Middlebury Panthers showed the hockey world that they are the class of the field. Saturday night, Middlebury won its second consecutive AWCHA Division III national championship, 6-0, over Gustavus Adolphus. Megan Hutchinson registered the shutout, stopping all 24 shots.

Middlebury’s Michelle Labbe was named the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) Women’s College Division Player of the Year. Labbe, a dual citizen from Pt. Claire, Quebec, scored 24 goals and 32 assists for 56 points in her senior year.

Potsdam made some waves by taking Plattsburgh to a Sunday game, but in the end the Cardinals earned their fifth straight SUNYAC title and the accompanying NCAA tournament bid. Their reward? A date with former five-time champion Middlebury in the NCAA quarters. Russell Jaslow reports.
After a short night, Plattsburgh State regrouped from a 6-2 loss in Saturday’s SUNYAC Championship Game 2, and came out with a purpose in Game 3, controlling most of the game and defeating Potsdam State, 5-1. It was the fifth straight SUNYAC title for the Cardinals, and gave them an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament.
For the first time under the current format, the SUNYAC will have a third game in the finals. Potsdam used a four-goal second period to knot the series with Plattsburgh, forcing a deciding game Sunday.
Brendon Hodge provided the offensive spark with a hat trick, helping Plattsburgh to a game-one win over Potsdam in the SUNYAC finals.
The SUNYAC playoffs continue to look familiar. Plattsburgh coasted to two wins over Geneseo to reach the SUNYAC finals, but Potsdam upset second-seeded Oswego to gain the other championship berth. Russell Jaslow reviews and previews.
