Hockey East picks: November 11-16

A rash of upsets left both of us with only so-so results last weekend. This week will be better. Dave last week: 5-3-1 Jim last week: 5-3-1 Dave’s record-to-date: 32-15-6 Jim’s record-to-date: 30-17-6 Here are this week’s picks: Friday, November 11 Merrimack at Boston University Dave’s pick: The absurdly inconsistent Terriers, who’ve been playing as if they have … Read more

Top lines, top-to-bottom, and heading to the top

These are three things I think I learned from this weekend’s games. Three: Boston College’s top line is as good as its stats. I wasn’t sure until I saw Chris Kreider, Bill Arnold, and Kevin Hayes in action on Friday. Krieder leads Hockey East in scoring (8-7–15), followed by Arnold (7-7–14) and then in fifth … Read more

Kreider, Milner lead Boston College over Maine

Boston College showed why it’s the number one team in the country, dismantling Maine, 5-1 before 6,304 at Kelley Rink. BC used two power-play goals, one shorthanded, and two while at even strength and limited the Black Bears to 21 shots, few of the quality variety. The all-around victory improved the Eagles’ record to 8-1-0 … Read more

Snobbery, similarities, and kissing in Hockey East

These are three things I think I learned from this weekend’s games. Three: I better rethink my stance as an admitted Hockey East snob. It was one thing when Massachusetts-Lowell lost to Connecticut on Tuesday. The River Hawks are coming off a season that saw them finish last in Hockey East with a 4-21-2 league record and … Read more

Hockey East picks, Oct. 14-18

Dave got off to a one-game lead over Jim last weekend and came within an extra-attacker goal at 19:58 of doubling that lead at Northeastern on Friday.  Yes, folks, Jim’s win last year was a total fluke. This year will be back to the norm of Dave’s superiority. Dave last week: 6-3-1 Jim last week: 5-4-1 … Read more

First impressions across Hockey East

It’s only one weekend so I reserve the right to unlearn what I think I’ve learned. But here are three things I think I learned from this weekend’s games. Three, Massachusetts may have found at least one solution to the graduation of goaltender Paul Dainton. I know it’s just one game and the road to Goaltender Stardom … Read more

Millan stops 35, ties school win record, as Boston University blanks New Hampshire

If Hockey East was looking to open the season with a bang by matching up perennial heavyweights Boston University and New Hampshire, it didn’t get the desired result. Although the game played out considerably closer than the final 5-0 score, the Terriers still took a 2-0 second-period lead and pretty much ended all suspense with … Read more

Northeastern ties UMass, 3-3, with dramatic late goal

Two seconds away from losing its home opener for its new coach, Northeastern used an extra-attacker goal by Braden Pimm to salvage a 3-3 tie with Massachusetts. The Huskies had threatened mightily during stretches late in the third period but hadn’t been able to get the equalizer. With the puck outside of the zone and … Read more
