Arizona State’s Matthew Mayich remains hospitalized more than a week after collapsing during an outdoor team workout, according to multiple reports.
Mayich, a 21-year-old defenseman who transferred to Arizona State from Clarkson this offseason, reportedly collapsed during the Aug. 20 workout and was transported to a hospital. Emergency responders initially described the incident as heat-related. The Arizona Republic, which first identified Mayich, subsequently reported that he suffered a possible cardiac event.
According to reporting by The Athletic, the roughly 60-minute workout had a “military-style” format and included sprints, planks, push-ups and bear crawls. Players who fell behind or failed to properly follow instructions were reportedly required to perform additional exercises. The workout was led by Tim Ziesel, a military veteran who is not a university employee.
Arizona State has said it is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the workout, although athletic director Graham Rossini told Arizona Sports that the school was collecting information and determining whether there were lessons to be learned rather than conducting an investigation into alleged wrongdoing.
The university has declined to publicly identify Mayich, citing privacy laws. The St. Louis Blues, who selected him in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL Draft, confirmed that the organization has been receiving updates through Mayich’s agent and expressed support for the player and his family.
Mayich recorded seven goals and eight assists for Clarkson last season and previously played more than 250 games in the Ontario Hockey League
