Maine women’s hockey coach Molly Engstrom has stepped down to accept an assistant coaching role with the PWHL expansion team Detroit, the school announced Friday. A national search for Engstrom will begin immediately, the school said.

The PWHL Detroit team is scheduled to begin play this fall.

“I would like to thank Molly for her leadership and contributions to the women’s ice hockey program over the past four seasons,” said Maine athletic director Jude Killy, via statement. “She has helped grow our program and women’s ice hockey here in meaningful ways and we wish her well as she begins her new role with PWHL Detroit.”

“I am so grateful for my time spent in Maine, it was truly a dream,” said Engstrom in a statement. “The University of Maine afforded me the first opportunity to be a head coach and live in a place that I absolutely adored. I will forever be grateful for that. (This) was a decision that tore at my heartstrings but I know the team is ready to take on the next challenge.”

“Molly’s experience as a coach and as a former player who competed at the highest level is exciting to add to our group, as someone who understands the dynamics of successful teams on and off the ice,” said Manon Rhéaume, PWHL Detroit General Manager. “She aligns with the vision and core values we are building within the organization and will be relatable for our players alongside the important support she provides Head Coach Josh Sciba.”

Engstrom joined Maine in 2022 and was a runner-up for Hockey East Coach of the Year in her debut season. As a player, Engstrom earned a silver medal with Team USA at the 2010 Olympics and bronze in 2006 along with six medals at IIHF Women’s World Championships, including four gold.
