Lake Superior State is giving Taffy Abel Arena a facelift.
The university recently approved $6.3 million in donor-funded upgrades to the James C. Norris Center, including a new ice plant, boards and glass, benches, plus HVAC and roof work.
The project is part of a broader push announced in February, with more than $10 million committed to campus improvements aimed at making the school more welcoming and functional for students and visitors.
Taffy Abel is the home arena of Laker Hockey, and also serves youth leagues, adult rec teams, figure skaters, and the school’s ACHA programs.
Coach Damon Whitten called it “meaningful” to head into the program’s 60th season with a refreshed home. The work is planned to be completed by the start of the 2026-27 season.
