Quinnipiac scored six power-play goals en route to a 7-2 victory over the Canisius Ice Griffs Friday night at the Northford Ice Pavilion. Brian Herbert lead the Braves with two-power-play goals as Quinnipiac converted on six of its eight opportunities with the man-advantage.
Canisius drops to 10-9-3 on the season and fall to fifth place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Quinnipiac jumps to third place in the MAAC with a 13-9-3 record.
The Ice Griffs fell behind 3-1 after one period as the Braves struck first on a Herbert’s first power-play goal at 14:56.
Jed Holtzman scored on a 5 on 3 advantage to increase the lead to 2-0 at the 18:00 mark and Chris Cerrella scored another power-play tally 14 seconds later to give Quinnipiac a 3-0 cushion.
David Deeves scored a goal at 18:28 to cut Canisius’ deficit back to two goals.
The second period belonged to the Braves again as Quinnipiac scored three goals to build a 6-1 lead over the Ice Griffs. Cerrella scored an unassisted goal at 4:41 and Herbert notched his second power-play goal at 14:05 before Shawn Mansoff scored the Braves’ fifith power-play goal with 2:55 remaining in the period.
Ryan Olson opened the third period with a goal at the 3:06 into the period and Canisius’ Matt Shewchuk closed the scoring with his second goal of the year at the 6:21 mark.
Freshman goalie Justin Eddy was solid in net for the Braves, stopping 56 shots and leading Quinnipiac to a perfect 15 of 15 on the penalty kill as the Ice Griffs were unable to convert on any of their extra-man advantages.
Stephen Fabiilli stopped seven first-period shots before being replaced by Sean Weaver. Weaver, making his first appearance in net since December 3, stopped 17 of 21 shots in the final two periods.
