Army West Point coach Brian Riley is in his 15th season behind the Black Knights bench, a role that’s been in the family since his father Jack Riley became head coach in 1950, followed by brother Rob Riley, whom Brian replaced in 2004.

On episode 4 of USCHO Spotlight, Riley talks with hosts Jim Connelly and Ed Trefzger about a variety of subjects, including this year’s team, which picked up seven of eight possible points on the road in the first two weekends of Atlantic Hockey play.

Other topics include the history and legacy of the Riley family in hockey and in coaching, recruiting hockey players who will also serve their country, the progress of Atlantic Hockey over the last decade, and a look at Riley’s tenure on the NCAA D-I hockey committee.

Hosts Jim Connelly and Ed Trefzger look back on the weekend that was, including No. 3 Minnesota Duluth’s sweep of No. 1 Notre Dame on the road and a very successful U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame game in Las Vegas — at least for the fans and the atmosphere, but with some facility issues — as North Dakota downed Minnesota in front of a crowd dominated by Fighting Hawks fans. We discuss the possibility of getting a hometown program in Vegas.

  • Union and Cornell were both swept by unranked opponents
  • Arizona State is 6-2-0 on the season after sweeping Omaha at home

Hosts Jim Connelly and Ed Trefzger review the top results of the weekend: UMass — or should we say #NewMass — split on the weekend with No. 1 Ohio State, while No. 2 Notre Dame swept Omaha and No. 20 Union did the same to No. 12 Northeastern.

Boston College and Boston University are both 0-3 for the first time since the end of prohibition.

We also look at RIT’s annual Brick City Homecoming game, and several weekend splits.

Plus a discussion of the merits of 5-on-5 and 3-on-3 overtimes and how the PairWise Rankings can reflect overtime.
