Despite the efforts of goaltender Ryan Williams, who stopped 51 shots, the Bowdoin Polar Bears defeated the Massachusetts-Dartmouth Corsairs Wednesday night in the first round of the NCAA D-III Tournament, 5-2. The Polar Bears set a new school mark for victories with the win, with 23, and move on to play Utica Saturday night in Utica.

Bowdoin got going early, firing the first 17 shots of the game, and got the first goal on a power play on a Jay Livermore shot from the point at 9:21.

The Corsairs tied it early in the second when a shot by William Colclough rebounded to Evangelos Stefanou, who scored at 6:19. However, just 3:21 later, Dylan Shamburger picked up a rebound of a shot by Livermore and gave Bowdoin the lead back.

The Corsairs drew even again at 14:32 when Casey Skolnik picked up a rebound in the slot and backhanded it home. However, the Corsairs could not hold the Polar Bears back, as Bowdoin notched its second power-play goal of the game on a Kyle Lockwood shot from the left circle with only 25 seconds left in the period.

At just 1:18 of the third, Bowdoin got its first two-goal lead of the night when John McGinnis flipped a shot under the crossbar. Al Milley scored at 7:53 off a faceoff won by Colin Downey to seal the game for Bowdoin.
