Wiebler Nets Winner As Bentley Sweeps Quinnipiac

Sophomore forward Troy Wiebler tipped in a shot at 12:52 of the third period to snap a 2-2 tie as Bentley took a stunning two-game sweep of Quinnipiac with a 3-2 win Saturday night.

Losers of four straight coming into the weekend, the Falcons recorded their second weekend sweep of the season and improved their conference record to 5-10-4, 7-15-4 overall. Quinnipiac, now winless in its last three, fell to 11-13-4 overall and 8-6-4 in Atlantic Hockey.

On the game-winning goal, Wiebler established position in front of the Bobcats’ net and got a piece of teammate Seth Vinocur’s slapshot that skipped under the pads of Quinnipiac goalie Jamie Holden.

With the score tied 1-1 after two periods, both teams got the offense going in the final frame. Bentley’s Brett Murphy staked Bentley to a one-goal advantage at 10:30. The Falcons had possession in the Bobcat zone and Murphy came skating behind the play after a line change, received the pass above the left circle and buried the one-timer.

Quinnipiac answered a minute later on junior Matt Craig’s tally at 11:46. Craig cleaned up a rebound in traffic in front of the Bentley net, but Wiebler’s goal proved to be the difference.

Bentley goalie Geordan Murphy was impressive again in net, making 21 saves, including a beauty with under a minute to go in the third period. Holden made 24 saves for the Bobcats in the loss.

Sophomore Brendan McCartin staked Bentley to a 1-0 lead after the first period, with his ninth score of the season at 13:59. McCartin found himself alone in front of Holden with the puck on his stick after collecting a rebound, and flipped the puck over Holden’s shoulder. He finished the game with a goal and an assist.

Quinnipiac evened the score in the second frame, with sophomore Ty Deinema converting on a penalty shot at 5:52. The second-year forward broke free of the Bentley defense and was hauled down before he got a shot off. On the resulting free play, he snapped a wrist shot past Murphy.
