Griffs Shut Down Bobcats

Canisius junior goalie Bryan Worosz posted 23 saves as the Golden Griffins shut out visiting Quinnipiac, 3-0, in Atlantic Hockey action Friday night at the Buffalo State Sports Arena.

Canisius snaps a six-game losing streak against the Bobcats dating back to Feb. 16, 2001 and records its first shutout of the season to improve to 3-7-5 overall, 3-4-2 in Atlantic Hockey. Quinnipiac has dropped three straight and falls to 7-8-2, 4-1-2 in Atlantic Hockey.

The Griffs opened the scoring at the 11:19 mark of the opening period on a goal by sophomore Andrew Dawe. Dawe took a pass from freshman Michael Cohen and beat Quinnipiac goalie Jamie Holden in front of the crease.

Canisius extended the lead to 2-0 with 2:11 remaining in the first period on freshman Billy Irish-Baker’s third goal of the season. Dawe set the goal up with a pass from along the far boards and Irish- Baker beat Holden on the stick side.

Senior captain Rob Martin gave the Griffs a 3-0 advantage at the 6:55 mark of the second on a two-on-one, with junior Ryan Corcoran notching the assist. The goal was Martin’s third of the season.

Worosz and the Canisius defense shut down the Bobcats’ offense the rest of the way to preserve the victory, holding Quinnipiac to only two shots in the final period.

Canisius and Quinnipiac return to the Buffalo State Sports Arena Saturday afternoon for a 4 p.m. rematch. Canisius will hold an Alumni Day game before the game at 1 p.m. and hold the annual “Skate With The Griffs” following the game.
