Mercyhurst remained unbeaten in the MAAC with a 5-2 win over Army Saturday night for a sweep of their two-game weekend set.
The Lakers scored twice in the first period’s last minute to take a lead they would never relinquish. Freshman forward Rich Hansen scored his third goal of the year from sophomore linemates Adam Tackaberry and Peter Rynshoven at 19:14.
That was followed just 31 seconds later by the first of two goals from sophomore defenseman Jamie King, whose 60-footer from the right point eluded Army senior netminder Scott Hamilton.
King scored his second of the season and game at 5:53 of the second, coming in from the right point and putting a rebound behind Hamilton. But, as they did Friday night, the Black Knights battled back by scoring two goals within a 17-second span midway in the period.
Freshman forward Chris Garceau (his second) and freshman forward Tim Quinlan (his first) got Army back in the tilt with scores at 9:36 and 9:53 respectively, but Mercyhurst goaltender Peter Aubry allowed no further damage.
The Lakers put the game away with power-play third-period goals from Tackaberry, his sixth and third in the series, and from senior forward Louis Goulet, his second goal of the campaign.
Mercyhurst outshot Army 31-15 including a 14-1 advantage in the third when the Black Knights incurred three minor penalties, their only ones of the game.
The win improved Mercyhurst’s record to 5-3-1 overall and 5-0-1 in the MAAC. Army dropped to 1-6-0 and 1-4-0 respectively. Mercyhurst is now 5-0 lifetime against the Black Knights.
