Chris Duggan scored two goals and Brad Kenny notched three assists as Canisius defeated Quinnipiac, 5-2.
The Ice Griffs moved into a tie with Connecticut for fourth place in the MAAC with 23 points (10-8-3 MAAC, 12-10-3). The Braves remain in third place with 26 points (15-10-4, 12-7-2 MAAC).
Todd Bisson opened the scoring for the Ice Griffs at the 6:58 mark of the first period and Duggan made it 2-0 at 7:25 of the first before Corey Lucas made it 3-0 with 1:34 remaining in the first period. All three goals were on a four-on-four situation.
“We were able to jump to a good start,” said Canisius coach Brian Cavanaugh. “We landed a couple of four-on-fours and put some players with some speed on the ice and they were able to produce.”
Duggan made it 4-0 at the 5:29 mark of the second period and Jeff Street made it 5-0 with a blast from the point.
Quinnipiac got on the board as Ryan Olson scored on the power play.
The Braves cut the lead to 5-2 in the third period with a Shawn Mansoff power play goal, but could not muster anything else.
“With Connecticut coming here tomorrow, we have an opportunity to make a move in the MAAC standings,” said Cavanaugh. “We are playing with a lot of confidence right now and we must keep the ball rolling.”
