MINNEAPOLIS — Grant Besse scored twice and Matt Jurusik made 32 saves as Wisconsin held off No. 19 Minnesota 4-3 on Friday.
The Gophers had a last-minute Tommy Novak goal overturned on replay when officials ruled that Vinni Lettieri was offside on the zone entry.
Minnesota missed a chance to clinch the Big Ten regular season championship and saw its lead over Michigan shrink to one point with one game remaining.
Jedd Soleway, Luke Kunin and Besse scored as the Badgers opened a 3-1 lead after two periods.
Lettieri cut the Gophers’ deficit to one with a third-period goal before Besse scored into an empty net.
Novak scored with 52.4 seconds left and initially was ruled to have tied the game with five seconds on the clock, but officials waved it off after review.
“For the criteria leading to a goal, we have the ability to review an offsides,” referee Colin Kronforst told a pool reporter after the game. “Obviously that leads directly to a goal. Both Marco [Hunt] and myself initiated the review and there was conclusive video evidence obviously that he was offside.”
After winning just one of its first 17 Big Ten games, Wisconsin (8-17-8, 3-12-4-2 Big Ten) has won two in a row. The Badgers, who lost both home games to Minnesota this season by a combined score of 13-2, also beat Penn State last Saturday.
Eric Schierhorn made 19 saves for Minnesota (18-16, 13-6), which has lost two straight.
