ST. CLOUD, Minn. — Miami won both of its series-opening games against St. Cloud State in the regular season, and it continued the trend to start the NCHC playoffs.
Riley Barber’s goal 10:10 into overtime helped the RedHawks overcome allowing a tying goal in the final second and delivered a 5-4 victory over the top-seeded Huskies on Friday.
St. Cloud State’s Kevin Gravel scored his second goal of the game on a power play to tie the game as regulation time expired; video replay confirmed the goal was scored with 0.1 seconds on the clock.
But Miami rebounded in the extra session to take the lead in the best-of-three series. Game 2 is scheduled for Saturday.
The RedHawks (13-19-3) had four one-goal leads that the Huskies overcame. Kevin Morris, Chris Joyaux, Cody Murphy and Sean Kuraly scored for Miami, which finished in last place in the NCHC standings, losing eight of its last 10 regular season games.
The Huskies (21-9-5), meanwhile, were 7-2-1 in their last 10 games before the postseason. Tim Daly and Nic Dowd also scored for St. Cloud State, which replaced starting goaltender Ryan Faragher (23 saves) after Miami’s fourth goal.
Charlie Lindgren made seven saves but allowed Barber’s winner.
Ryan McKay stopped 29 shots for the RedHawks.
