Brown (1-3-1, 1-3-1) picked up its first win of the 2004-2005 season on Saturday evening, earning a 5-2 win over Yale (0-6-0, 0-4-0)in an ECACHL and Ivy League contest. Freshman Brian McNary helped lead the way with the first two goals of his career and one assist.
McNary started the night with his first career goal at 10:20 of the opening period, as the Bears scored first in a game for the first time this season. Sophomores Sean Dersch and Antonin Roux each earned assists on the goal. Less than five minutes later, at 13:47, McNary added his second of the night on a Brown power-play to give the Bears a 2-0 lead. Senior Gerry Burke and freshman David Robertson each assisted on the goal.
The Bears increased their lead to 3-0 just 3:40 into the second period when Roux deflected a Sean Hurley slapshot from the point into the back of the net. McNary earned his third point of the night after making a great play in the corner to get Hurley the puck.
With Brown on its way to its first victory of the year, the Bulldogs made things interesting with back-to-back power-play goals at 2:21 and at 8:42 of the third period. After the Bears failed to convert on a power-play with 7:26 remaining, the Brown penalty kill kept Yale off the board on a Bulldog power play with under five minutes left in the game. After killing the penalty, senior Mike Meech recaptured the momentum for Brown with his first goal of the year at 17:37. Junior Adam Tichauer and senior Les Haggett each assisted on the goal.
Yale pulled goalie Josh Gartner with just over two minutes left in the game, and Haggett added an empty-netter at 18:40 to put the game out of reach.
Junior Kevin Kliman earned his first career win with 21 saves in net.
