The third period proved to be critical for the second consecutive night as St. Lawrence scored two goals in the last 1:45 of regulation to beat Colgate 2-1. Sophomore Gina Kingsbury notched both St. Lawrence goals within 30 seconds, and now has 17 goals in just 16 games this year.
Colgate scored the first goal of the game at 8:11 of the first period. Colgate’s Heather Murphy shot towards the net, and the puck deflected off a Saint player and into the net. The Saints outshot the Raiders 14-7 in the first period, but were unable to put the puck past Raider goaltender Rebecca Lahar.
The Saints continued to battle for the tying goal in the second period, outshooting the Raiders 15-5 in the second period, but were stopped again by Lahar.
It appeared as though the third period was going to be just as the first two; however, in the last two minutes of regulation the Saints were able to find the back of the net.
On the first goal, Meghan Maguire passed the puck to Powers, who was breaking through the neutral zone. Powers carried the puck into the zone and passed the puck across to Kingsbury, who was breaking towards the net. Kingsbury was able to tap the puck between Lahar’s legs to put the Saints on the board.
Twenty-nine seconds later, Kingsbury notched the winning goal after deflecting Maguire’s shot from the point over the goaltender’s right shoulder.
Rachel Barrie stopped a total of 18 shots, as the Saints held a 42-18 advantage in shots on goal. The Saints went 0-5 on the power play and stopped both advantages from the Raiders.
The Saints head to Dartmouth next weekend for the last weekend of regular-season play. The series against Dartmouth will likely determine first place in the ECAC North.
