Michigan defeated Lake Superior State 5-0 Thursday night at the Taffy Abel Arena and improved to 15-8-5 overall as they handed the Lakers their eighth shutout of the season.
“We played as hard as we could,” said Laker Coach Frank Anzalone, “I don’t think we got nailed to the back wall, I don’t think we were mesmerized, but we can’t handle all that adversity.”
John Shouneyia gave the Wolverines a 1-0 lead just 3:26 into the game when he scored a shorthanded unassisted goal.
With less than five minutes to play in the second period, the Wolverines were awarded a power play opportunity and added to their lead as Milan Gajic scored his sixth of the season off a pass from Eric Warner.
Jed Ortmeyer put Michigan up by three as he sent a pass from Eric Nystrom past Laker netminder Matt Violin early in the third on the power play.
Less than three minutes later Nystrom scored his 10th of the season and Komisarek clinched the 5-0 shutout with a goal at 18:01 in the third period.
“The guys that finished the game for us, Wilson, Magnuson, Micek, they played as hard as they could and that is all we ask,” said Anzalone.
Michigan out-shot LSSU 25-15 as they improved to 12-5-4 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.
The Lakers fell to 7-19-1 overall and 4-16-1 in the CCHA.
Both teams will head to Detroit for a Saturday night game at Joe Louis Arena. The game marks the end of the regular-season series between the two teams.
Notes: The Lakers were without sophomore Adam Nightingale as he served a suspension for a penalty taken last weekend during the Laker’s road-series against the University of Nebraska-Omaha.
Mike Cammalleri was still missing from the Wolverine lineup with mononucleosis.
