Quick Start Propels UConn Past Fairfield

Behind a quick start Friday night, Connecticut upended Fairfield 5-1 in MAAC action. The loss drops Fairfield to 4-15-2 (2-11-2 MAAC), while improving Connecticut’s record to 6-11-6 (5-5-4 MAAC).

The breaks went in favor of UConn at 14:50 of the first period, as a clearing attempt by a Fairfield defenseman deflected off a stick to a wide-open D.J. Miller in the slot. He found the back of the net to give UConn a 1-0 advantage.

Connecticut jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second period on goals by Matt Owens and Ron D’Angelo with assists to Eric Nelson, Justin Postiglione, and Adam Rhein.

Fairfield battled in the third, outshooting UConn 8-5, but couldn’t score. Connecticut had no trouble tickling the twine, however, as both Matt Herhal and D’Angelo scored at 11:13 and 13:00 to give the Huskies a five-goal lead.

The Stags outshot UConn 28-22. Rookie Michael Wolfe made 17 saves in goal for Fairfield and collected the loss. Sophomore Artie Imbriano made 27 stops between the pipes for Connecticut.

The two teams will meet again Saturday night for the final time this season in Storrs, Conn., at 7:30 p.m..
