Junior goalie David Burleigh helped Miami (9-10-2, 6-7-2) to its sixth Central Collegiate Hockey Association victory with a 28-save, 1-0 defeat of the visiting Ferris State Bulldogs. The RedHawks successfully killed eight penalties in the contest, extending their streak to 16 straight penalties without allowing a goal.
Miami scored the only goal of the contest at 17:53 in the second frame when sophomore Mike Kompon found his linemate, sophomore Derek Edwardson open for a top-shelf shot and a power-play goal. Edwardson’s goal was his first of the season, and third game-winner of his career. It was the only power-play that the RedHawks were successful on as they went one-for-six in the game.
One goal was all that Burleigh needed, stopping 12 shots in the first two periods and 16 in the third period. The shutout is Burleigh’s seventh of his career, and the victory moves him into second place all-time at Miami with 37 wins. Burleigh continues to add to his Miami-best seven career blankings.
The RedHawks take a 33-32-11 all-time lead in the series with the Bulldogs, and square off against Ferris State again Saturday night at 7:35 p.m.
