Bemidji State scored three unanswered goals in the final 9:30 to snap a 2-2 tie and wrap up a three-game road trip through Ohio with a 5-2 win Sunday at the Clauss Ice Arena.
Kerri McEwen got BSU on the board in a hurry, netting her ninth goal of the season just 54 seconds after the opening faceoff. The remainder of the first period was scoreless, but Katie Ward struck just 24 seconds into the second with her sixth goal of the year to give BSU a 2-0 lead.
That goal was the fastest to start any period for BSU this year, and BSU’s fastest goal since scoring just 11 seconds into the first period in a 4-3 win at Wayne State on Dec. 3, 1999.
Findlay battled back to knot the score at 2-2 early in the third period. The Oilers picked up a Cori Forbes goal at 9:01 of the second and tied the score off the stick of Sherrie White at 6:44 of the third.
The Beavers put the game away with a pair of goals from Guylaine Hache and Caesare Stimson just 14 seconds apart, at 10:30 and 10:44 of the third period, to put the game away. Amber Fryklund capped off scoring for BSU with her ninth goal of the year at 16:59.
Bemidji State was outshot 37-19 for the game, but used a strong effort from Anik Cote in net. Cote saved 35 of 37 shots faced to pick up her second win of the season. The 35 saves are a season best for Cote and the most for her in a single game since recording 48 against Wisconsin on March 3, 2001.
All seven goals scored in the game came on even-strength opportunities. The teams combined to be whistled for just five penalties, with BSU going 0 for 2 on power-play opportunities and Findlay going 0 for 3.
Amber Fryklund turned in her highest-scoring game in more than two months, finishing with a goal and an assist. It is her first multi-point game since Nov. 3, when she had two assists in BSU’s 4-3 win over MSU-Mankato, and snaps her streak of consecutive games without a goal at nine.
Guylaine Hache (goal, assist) and Katie Ward (goal, assist) also had multiple-point games for BSU. It is Hache’s first multi-point game since Oct. 27, when she had three assists against St. Cloud State, and Ward’s second multi-point game in her last three outings.
Bemidji State improves to 8-7-4 with the win. Findlay falls to 7-11-1 overall.
