First-year forward Annie Grabowski and junior tri-captain Danielle Williams gave Amherst a 2-0 lead it would never relinquish en route to a 4-2 win at NESCAC rival Wesleyan University on Saturday.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Jeffs, who improved to 3-6 overall and 3-5 in NESCAC play.
Grabowski’s goal came just two minutes into the opening period and stood as the game’s lone tally until Williams connected off a feed from sophomore forward Tory Serues 2:09 into the second stanza.
Wesleyan’s Anna Siliciano cut the deficit to 2-1 with a power-play score just over six minutes later, before Williams struck again with what turned out to be the game-winner with 5:07 remaining before the second intermission.
The pesky Cardinals cut the lead to just one goal yet again, when Liz Adams took a feed from teammate Stacey Orr and snuck a wrister past Amherst junior goaltender Heidi Alexander with just 4:49 left in regulation.
Not to be outdone, Amherst senior tri-captain Hilary Zwerdling cemented the win with an empty-netter in the waning seconds to set the final score at 4-2.
Alexander had a spectacular game in goal, finishing with 39 saves, including 19 in the third period, to preserve the win. Williams’ pair of goals upped her season total to five of the Jeffs’ 15 total goals this season.
