Freshman Adam Rhein led Connecticut to a 3-2 victory over MAAC rival Quinnipiac on Sunday afternoon at the UConn Ice Arena in Storrs.
Quinnipiac jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first period. Ryan Olson notched both of Quinnipiac’s goals at the 9:35 and 17:03 marks, respectively. UConn’s Ron D’Angelo responded 20 seconds later, after the last Quinnipiac goal, to cut the Huskies deficit to one. Matt Herhal and Rhein, scoring his first collegiate point, assisted on the goal.
D.J. Miller opened the second period scoring on an assist from Scott Brown to tie the game at two apiece at the 11:41 mark. Rhein scored the game-winner with a 1:22 remaining in the second stanza to put UConn on top.
Jason Carey earned his first victory of the season in net, stopping 38 shots on goal. Quinnipiac’s Jamie Holden recorded 10 saves. The Braves outshot Connecticut, 40-13.
Connecticut will host Canisius on Friday, Nov. 30 at 7:30 p.m. at the UConn Ice Arena.
