Sophomore Lisa Rasmussen scored two goals and junior netminder Sarah Ahlquist came up with 35 saves as Princeton avenged Saturday’s loss to Mercyhurst with a 3-1 win over the Lakers on Sunday afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink.
The two teams played through a scoreless 30 minutes before Princeton freshman April Brown scored the first goal of her collegiate career at 10:04 of the second period. Sophomore Gretchen Anderson passed the puck to classmate Angela Gooldy, and the resulting shot was deflected back to Brown, who fired it in for a 1-0 Tiger lead.
Princeton increased its lead when Rasmussen tallied the eventual game-winner at 15:50 of the second period.
Rasmussen scored again at 7:54 of the final period to give the Tigers a three-goal cushion. A Deland shot was saved but the rebound kicked out to Rasmussen, who collected the loose puck and found the back of the net.
Ahlquist lost her bid for a shutout when Tracy Logan scored at 14:31 of the third period off of an assist from Kelly Raycroft.
Ahlquist registered 35 saves for a total of 65 stops on the weekend. Tiffany Ribble played the first two periods between the pipes for the Lakers, and registered six saves while allowing two goals. Desirae Clark closed out the game in goal for Mercyhurst, posting five saves and allowing one goal.
Next up for Princeton will be a two-game series against conference foe St. Lawrence, last season’s NCAA runner-up. The games are scheduled for Friday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 10 at 4 p.m. at Hobey Baker Rink.
