Connecticut and Iona played to a 4-4 tie in MAAC Hockey League action on Friday evening.
Iona’s Kelly Bararuk netted a hat trick for the Gaels and Brent Williams added two assists, while UConn’s Ron D’Angelo had a goal and an assist.
UConn’s Mike Boylan opened the scoring six minutes into the first period, but Iona evened the score on Bararuk’s first goal of the night just over two minutes later.
With two minutes remaining in the period, Ryan Carter nailed a shot past UConn goalie Jason Carey to take the lead, 2-1, heading into the second stanza.
D.J. Miller scored a power play tally with help from D’Angelo four minutes into the second period to even the score, but Bararuk gave the Gaels’ the lead for the second time less than a minute later, raising the score to 3-2.
D’Angelo’s scored at the 11:48 mark evening the score again to begin the third period.
UConn then took the lead for the second time 1:24 into the third period, when Matt Herhal was fed a pass from rookie Matt Grew.
Iona would come back and at the 9:12 mark, Bararuk slipped the puck through the five-hole to tie the score sending the game into overtime.
The teams played scoreless in the overtime to each gain a point in MAAC play.
Carey stopped 18 saves in net for the Huskies, while Scott Galenza made had 30 saves in goal. UConn outshot Iona 34-22 on the night.
UConn travels to UMass-Lowell on Saturday while Iona will host AIC next Friday.
