For the second straight year, Miami defeated the University of Windsor Lancers 6-1 in a preseason exhibition contest Saturday night. Junior Nick Jardine scored twice as the RedHawks outshot the visitors, 55-11.
Miami took advantage of a Windsor penalty at 11:19 in the first period when Jardine netted his first goal to give the RedHawks a 1-0 lead. Seniors Evan Cheverie and Mike Glumac had assists. Five minutes later, senior Clarke Walford scored the eventual game-winner on a power play with assists from freshman Todd Grant and sophomore Derek Edwardson.
The Lancers came back with a power-play goal of their own 11 seconds before the end of the period. John Bramer scored after receiving a pass from Mike Budrewicz on the doorstep of the Miami goal.
Glumac’s short-handed goal was the only score in the second period, then the RedHawks put the game out of reach with goals in the third period from Greg Hogeboom, Cheverie and Jardine.
Juniors David Burleigh and David Bowen split the time in night stopping six and four Windsor shots, respectively. Windsor scored its goal against Burleigh. Windsor goalie Nick Greer made 49 saves.
Miami opens its regular season next weekend at home against Merrimack Friday and Saturday.
