Amherst co-captain Gregg DiNardo tallied two goals and two assists in a 6-1 blowout win over visiting Bowdoin Friday night at Orr Rink.
The Jeffs improved to 13-4-3 overall and 9-2-3 in NESCAC play with their fifth win in their last six games, moving into a tie for third place with Trinity in the conference standings. Bowdoin fell to 10-7-1 (8-6-0 NESCAC) with the loss.
Amherst took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission after junior forward Bob Miele and DiNardo each found the back of the net in the opening period. Amherst tri-captain Chris Orszulak and DiNardo then opened the second stanza with a pair of goals to give the Jeffs a commanding 4-0 lead at the 9:09 mark.
Bowdoin senior Mike Carosi responded just 1:39 later with the Polar Bears’ only score of the game to cut the deficit to 4-1, but the momentum was short-lived as Amherst senior forward Stephen Tornabene put the game out of reach at 15:26 with his fourth goal of the season.
Rob Hill added an insurance tally for Amherst 11:40 into the third period to set the final score at 6-1, assisted by DiNardo and fellow senior Jim Smith.
Amherst goaltender Nick Rieser was stellar between the pipes with 23 saves, narrowly missing his second shutout of the season. Meanwhile, Colin Robinson, Mike Healey and Brian Losier each played 20 minutes in goal for the Polar Bears and combined for 20 saves in defeat.
