Sevens were lucky and wild for Wentworth and junior forward Tim Yakimowsky on Wednesday night.
Yakimowsky scored seven goals, establishing a new school record, helping Wentworth to a school-record seventh straight win, 12-1 over UMass-Dartmouth in an ECAC Northeast game at Matthews Arena.
Yakimowsky had no assists, and his seven points tied a school mark. Wentworth (15-6-1, 13-1-0 ECACNE) moved into a first-place tie with the win, even with Johnson & Wales.
The Leopards got on the board early, as sophomore forward Dave Zelasko scored 1:45 into the contest. UMass-Dartmouth tied the game on a goal by freshman forward Scott Gallagher just 30 seconds later, but couldn’t score again the rest of the way.
Yakimowsky scored the next four goals, including a natural hat trick in the first period. His second goal was assisted by senior forward Ivan Filippov. For Filippov, the school’s all-time leading scorer, it was his 100th career assist.
Freshman forward Alex Marinkovich gave the Leopards a 6-1 cushion after two, scoring 11:46 into the second period.
Yakimowsky added three more in the third, while junior forward McGregor Chadwick, freshman forward Ben Pierce, and Marinkovich rounded out the scoring. Sophomore forward Jamie Weiss had five assists on the night.
Wentworth was 6-for-7 on the power play and 6-for-6 in shorthanded situations. Freshman goalie Raj Bhangoo made 27 saves and held the Corsairs scoreless over the final 57:45. UMass-Dartmouth freshman goalie Ryan Grant made 20 saves over the first two periods, and took the loss.
