The Wisconsin-Stevens Point Pointers beat up on St. John’s University 7-1 in a non-conference interleague matchup on Saturday.
The Johnnies got on the board first with a beautiful power-play goal by Chad Hacker just 3:10 into the first period, but that was be the only offense the Johnnies would have.
Four minutes later, the Pointers tied it up at one. Nick Glander was able to poke a loose puck past Johnnies’ goalie Rick Gregory at 7:09. The next 11 minutes would be back and forth action until Ernie Thorp worked his way into the Johnnies’ zone and beat Gregory with a hard wrist shot to the stick side, staking the Pointers to a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.
The second and third periods belonged to the Pointers. Ryan Maxson picked up his first of three goals on the afternoon, absolutely undressing Gregory extending the Pointer lead to two goals just 50 seconds into the second period.
The onslaught continued with Nick Glander picking up his second goal, off a nifty pass from Mike Slobodnik. Maxson added his second goal on the power play at 7:02, rounding out the second-period scoring.
The third saw Mikhail Salienko pick up his first goal of the season, beating Gregory five-hole, extending the Pointer lead to 6-1. Maxson finished his afternoon, picking up his hat trick at the 16:05 mark of the final stanza.
Pointer goalie Dave Cinelli picked up his first win of the season, making 11 saves, combined with freshman Ryan Scott, who saw his first action of his college career and picked up three saves before leaving with an apparent knee injury.
Special teams played an important role once again as the Johnnies were only able to acquire one power-play goal in 12 attempts, and at one point, were shotless in four consecutive power-play opportunities.
Johnnies’ goalie Rick Gregory finished with 23 saves.
