Minnesota captain Grant Potulny is expected to be out until early March after injuring his shoulder during the second period of Saturday’s game against North Dakota. After months of handwringing and lobbying, 12 athletic programs at eight schools, including four in men’s ice hockey, received grandfather protection Monday, allowing them to continue granting athletic scholarships. Alaska-Anchorage assistant captain John Hopson has quit the team and returned home, and sophomore defenseman Matt Hanson was ruled academically ineligible, according to the Anchorage Daily News. Three Wisconsin players, including starting goaltender Bernd Bruckler, were suspended by the team on Saturday. Bruckler was suspended for two games, while wingers Robbie Earl, a freshman who is second on the team with six goals, and Brent Gibson, a sophomore, were issued one-game penalties. Former Denver all-American and NHL defenseman Keith Magnuson was killed Monday on a highway outside of Toronto in a three-car accident. Colorado College assistant coach Norm Bazin has improved from critical to serious at Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane, Wash., where he has been in the intensive care unit since an automobile accident on Nov. 20.
