This Week in the SUNYAC: Jan. 30, 2003
Oswego and Buffalo State build momentum to sweeps, while Fredonia isn’t so fortunate in nonconference play. Meanwhile, Russell Jaslow features another word of the week.
Oswego and Buffalo State build momentum to sweeps, while Fredonia isn’t so fortunate in nonconference play. Meanwhile, Russell Jaslow features another word of the week.
The light has largely gone out for SUNYAC teams challenging non conference opponents. First place Fredonia discovers it can’t remain ranked if it can’t beat someone outside the league, even if it is undefeated in SUNYAC games. And the age old quest for the perfect pretzel. Russell Jaslow analyzes it all in this week’s SUNYAC report.
Craig Levey scored a goal in each of the first two periods, and freshman Brian Keane got a goal and an assist in the third period to help Hobart break a 2-2 tie on the road en route to a 5-2 victory over a pesky Brockport team in a nonconference matchup at the Tuttle North … Read more
A cataclysmic collision is on the schedule: yep, it’s Plattsburgh versus RIT as the SUNYAC-ECAC West showdown continues. Also: Russell Jaslow offers fond, and not-so-fond remembrances of the old NYCHA.
The four PrimeLink Shootout teams meet again; the SUNYAC mistreats Neumann; and Russell Jaslow gets into a fender-bender.
Fredonia makes believers out of SUNYAC observers; Potsdam gets victimized by the injury bug; and Russell Jaslow takes issue with the 15-second faceoff rule in his “Featured Word” segment.
The Fredonia State Blue Devils accomplished the unexpected Saturday — sweeping the first half of the SUNYAC schedule with a perfect 7-0 record — with a 2-1 home victory over the Potsdam State Bears. The win came despite the fact that for the second game in a row Potsdam outplayed its opponent only to fall … Read more
The Potsdam State Bears ran into a stone wall Friday night at the Sports Arena in Buffalo State, a wall by the name of Nick Berti. The Bengals goaltender stopped nearly everything that was thrown at him — including the kitchen sink — to lead his team to a 3-2 upset over Potsdam. In the … Read more
Shootout shenanigans, Plattsburgh and Potsdam, Cortland, Brockport and … last but not least … Elmira. Russell Jaslow reports.
A wild weekend in the SUNYAC saw Cortland pull off a result that hadn’t been seen since the days of disco; the excitement continues this weekend, then after Thanksgiving with the PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout. Russell Jaslow reports.
Call it the “Plattsburgh hangover.” The combination of Cortland State coming off a physically and emotionally draining victory over Plattsburgh State the night before and Potsdam State picking up where they left off in the last two periods against Oswego State Friday night resulted in Potsdam opening up 4-0 and 6-1 leads en route to … Read more
The Oswego State Great Lakers jumped out to a 4-0 lead against the Potsdam State Bears and held on for a hard-fought 5-3 victory in Oswego. The Bears’ penalty-killing let them down as they let up two power-play goals in Oswego’s first three chances. “In the first period and a half, we played as good … Read more
Fredonia State ignores the pundits; scoring starts early — and, in some arenas, ends early; and Russell Jaslow introduces us to one of his favorite words.
The Obvious When you are coming off a year in which you got less than two goals a league game and had the league’s worst power play at 10.8%, it’s fairly easy to spot what needs improvement. “Obviously, we need to score some goals to be there at the end,” said Fredonia coach Jeff Meredith. … Read more
Looking For More The Buffalo State Bengals achieved a first last year — a SUNYAC playoff spot. Now, they will be looking for more, such as home ice in the postseason and a winning record. It won’t be easy, as they lost 10 players, many of them key personnel, and their Western New York rival, … Read more
Strong Tandem Of the teams with strong goaltenders, Oswego may be in the best position of all. The Lakers have the best tandem in net, each of whom would probably start for any other team. Instead, they will most likely get to share the starting role, as they did last year. Senior Joe Lofberg comes … Read more
On The Right Path The 2001-2 season was a turnaround for Cortland, which finished tied for third place at 7-5-2 and sported an overall record of 14-11-4. The Red Dragons will be looking to continue on that road, as second year coach Tom Cranfield continues to put his mark on the team. “We’ll need to … Read more
Lost A Lot Last year was a successful one for first-year coach Brian Hills. His Geneseo Ice Knights worked out early-season kinks, then went 11-7-2 for the rest of the year, finished tied for third, defeated Potsdam in the first round in a thrilling mini-game, and stretched Plattsburgh to a mini-game before losing. With that … Read more
The Potsdam Bears used a second half surge to overcome the Brockport Golden Eagles, 5-2, at Maxcy Hall. The Bears trailed Brockport 2-1 after the first period, but two goals late in the second period gave them the lead heading into the third. Another pair in the final stanza clinched the win for Potsdam in … Read more
The Year of the Goaltender may be here in the SUNYAC, and that’s despite the graduation of All-World Niklas Sundberg. Plattsburgh might be the favorite once again, but faces old and new at other programs will have something to say about that.
