Providence women’s coach Matt Kelly has stepped down, it was announced on Sunday.

Kelly will take over as girls hockey coach at Bishop Kearney High School in Rochester, N.Y., according to a social media post from that school.

Kelly recently completed his eighth season behind the bench for the Friars and led the team to a 136-109-27 overall record and one NCAA tournament berth, in 2021. Assistant coach Nicole Norton will take over the program as interim head coach, while assistant coach Katie Burt will be elevated to interim associate head coach, according to a press release.

“I want to thank Matt for his work over the last eight years,” Providence athletic director Steve Napolillo said. “We are grateful for his contributions to the women’s ice hockey program and we wish him and his family all the best in the future.”

Norton begins her sixth season with the program.

During Norton’s five seasons, the Friars have reached the Hockey East Championship once and the Hockey East quarterfinals three times. A 2016 graduate of Syracuse, Norton played in 145 games for the Orange.

The school announced it will conduct a national search for its next women’s coach at the conclusion of the season.
