Alex Gettens has been chosen as the new women’s head coach at Maine, the school announced earlier this week.
A former Maine assistant, Gettens returns to Orono with more than a decade of coaching experience, most recently serving as an assistant coach at Colgate for the past two seasons where he helped guide the Raiders to the 2025 NCAA tournament. Before Colgate, Gettens spent six seasons at Vermont, serving as an assistant coach before being promoted to associate head coach for 2023-24.
“I am so thrilled to return to Orono and to be back at this amazing university,” said Gettens in a statement. “(It) is with great pride that I look forward to guiding our women’s hockey program into its next chapter of excellence.”
The Concord, N.H., native began his coaching career in 2011 with the St. Paul’s School girls hockey team and eventually helped the squad to a New England Prep School Championship in 2015. He also gained collegiate hockey operations experience at Vermont, working with the men’s program during the 2014-15 season while assisting the women’s program from 2014-16.
“We are pleased to announce Alex as the next head coach for Maine Women’s hockey,” said Maine athletic director Jude Killy in a statement. “Throughout the process, he shared an unbridled enthusiasm and vision of comprehensive excellence for our program and his plan to get there. (His) familiarity with Hockey East (and) his previous time at Maine are all bonuses.”
