Jeff Hamilton will take over as the new coach at Yale, the school announced on Monday.

Hamilton returns to Yale as a former team captain and the program’s all-time leading scorer. A three-time All-American and two-time Hobey Baker finalist, he graduated from Yale in 2001. He takes over the program from interim Joe Howe, who took over after the retirement of long-time coach Keith Allain.

“I am thrilled that Jeff will be returning to the Whale to lead our storied men’s ice hockey program,” said Yale athletic director Vicky Chun, via statement. “His deep understanding of Yale, combined with his experience and leadership, makes him the ideal person to guide us forward.”

Hamilton had a 10-year pro playing career including time in the NHL with the Chicago Blackhawks, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Carolina Hurricanes.

Hamilton has spent more than a decade as co-owner of the Connecticut Junior Rangers, developing players across the youth and junior levels.

“I’m honored and humbled to lead the next era of Yale men’s hockey,” Hamilton said in a statement. “Building on the foundation laid by my greatest mentor, coach Tim Taylor, and on the extraordinary success of the past decades, we will pursue excellence with the highest expectations.”

A native of Englewood, Ohio, Hamilton attended Avon (Conn.) Old Farms School before enrolling at Yale.
