LAS VEGAS — Trey Augustine is the 2026 Mike Richter Award winner, given to the nation’s top goalie.
The Michigan State junior was a two-time finalist for the award. The award was announced Saturday night at the Park MGM by Richter himself.
“It’s an honor and a privilege to receive this award,” said Augustine, via a pre-recorded video. “So many great goalies before me have achieved this and to be up there with them means a lot.”
After helping lead Michigan State to the Worcester Regional final, he signed a pro contract with the Detroit Red Wings and now plays for the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL.
“What you have to have in that position is consistency, and he’s been nothing but that,” Richter said. “He gives his team a chance to win every night, which is what you want from a goalie. There were so many good candidates out there. (He) should be proud of that award.”
Augustine finished with a 24-9-1 record, going 11-5-0 against ranked opponents. He set a new career-best with a .929 save percentage on the season, alongside a 2.11 goals-against average and 947 saves. His .929 save percentage ranked No. 6 among goaltenders nationally and his 2.11 goals against average was 11th.
Michael Hrabal of UMass and Josh Kotai of Augustana were the other two finalists for the award.
“I really think either of them deserved this award as well,” Augustine said in his statement. “They had fantastic seasons.”
Augustine also finished in the top 10 for the Hobey Baker award, the only goalie among the 10 finalists. He was also B1G goalie of the year. He became just the fourth B1G athlete to earn the award, joining Kyle McClellan (Wisconsin 2024), Jack LaFontaine (Minnesota 2021) and Cale Morris (Notre Dame 2018).
