SATURDAY ROUNDUP: 19K see Spartans storm past Michigan

No. 2 Michigan State took home the Iron D Trophy with a 5-2 win over top-ranked Michigan on Saturday night in B1G action before a crowd of 19,515 fans at Little Caesar’s Arena in Detroit.

“I loved our execution at the start,” said Michigan State coach Adam Nightingale. “(It’s) a big win for our team, a big moment for sure, but there’s still a lot of hockey left here, and we’ve got to keep focused on getting better.”

Saturday night’s sellout crowd of 19,515 ranks as the highest attended indoor game in college hockey this season, according to Michigan State.

Michigan State stormed out to a 4-0 lead with goals by Gavin O’Connell, Porter Martone, Charlie Stramel and Tiernan Shoudy before six minutes had elapsed in the second period.

Jayden Berron and Nick Moldenhauer added goals for the Wolverines to close the gap to 4-2 before Tommi Männistö scored an empty netter.
As for goaltending, Michigan’s Jack Ivankovic had 32 saves while the Spartans’ Trey Augustine turned away 25 shots.

No. 3 North Dakota 4, No. 10 Minnesota Duluth 1

Four third-period goals helped lift No. 3 North Dakota to a 4-1 win over No. 10 Minnesota Duluth on Saturday night to earn a split of the weekend series at AMSOIL Arena.

The win keeps North Dakota atop the NCHC standings with six games remaining in the regular season while also securing home ice for the quarterfinals of the conference tournament. NoDak also guaranteed that it will finish no lower than third place in the league standings.

The Fighting Hawks also continued their dominance over Minnesota Duluth, notching their 14th victory in the last 17 meetings while also extending their point streak to 12 straight games against the Bulldogs.

Abram Wiebe led the way offensively with three assists for his first three-point game of his career. Three others notched multiple points for the Hawks — Dylan James (two goals), Mac Swanson (goal, assist) and Will Zellers (goal, assist). Goalie Jan Špunar earned his 14th win of the season in his 17th start and finished with 25 saves. North Dakota improved to 163-93-11 all-time against Minnesota Duluth and 70-47-6 in Duluth.

Zam Plante had Duluth’s lone goal.

No. 4 Western Michigan 3, Miami 1

Western Michigan improved to 20-8-0 overall and 12-6-0 in NCHC play with a 3-1 win at Miami on Saturday night at Goggin Ice Center.

Bobby Cowan, Cole Spicer and Liam Valente were the goal scorers, while Alex Calbeck notched two assists. Hampton Slukynsky stopped 28 shots in net.

No. 5 Quinnipiac 8, Yale 0

The No. 5 Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey program rolled to a rivalry win on Saturday night, defeating ECAC Hockey rival Yale 8-0 in front of a sold-out crowd at M&T Bank Arena.

Ethan Wyttenbach recorded his first collegiate hat trick and the Bobcats’ second of the season. He now leads the nation in points (47) by six, with 19 goals and 28 assists on the year. It was his third straight 3-point night.

Dylan Silverstein recorded his second shutout of the season with 23 saves.

No. 7 Providence 6, Vermont 1

Providence earned its second 6-1 win over a Hockey East opponent in as many days, beating Vermont at home Saturday night. The Friars won by the same score at New Hampshire on Friday.

Aleksi Kivioja had two goals, as Providence led 2-0 after one period and 3-0 after two. Kivioja also added an assist.

Jack Parsons got the win in net, stopping 29 shots. It was the ninth straight win for Providence.

Colgate 3, No. 9 Cornell 2 (OT)

Isaiah Norlin scored just over a minute into overtime to lift Colgate to a 3-2 win over No. 9 Cornell at Lynah Rink on Saturday night. It was Colgate’s win over a ranked opponent this season.

“Another great effort by our group,” Colgate coach Mike Harder said. “We did a few more little things well tonight and that was the difference.”

The OT winner was Norlin’s second goal of the night. Reid Dyck made 31 saves, his seventh 30-plus save game of the season.

Michael Neumeier tallied a goal and an assist for Colgate.

No. 13 Wisconsin 5, Notre Dame 4 (OT)

After the two teams combined for eight goals through two periods, Wisconsin’s Christian Fitzgerald scored the only goal of the third to lift the 13th-ranked Wolverines to a 5-4 win over Notre Dame in B1G action on Saturday night before a crowd of 12,148 at Kohl Center.

Ben Dexheimer, Simon Tassy, Quinn Finley and Ryan Botterill also scored for Wisconsin. Eli Pulver and Daniel Hauser combined for 25 saves for the Badgers.

Bowling Green 3, No. 15 St. Thomas 1

After giving up a goal in the first minute, Bowling Green held on the rest of the way for a 3-1 home win over No. 15 St. Thomas on Saturday in CCHA action.

Ben Doran, Dominik Rymon and Jackson Niedermayer all scored for Bowling Green. Jacob Steinman made 31 saves in net, including 17 in the third period.

No. 19 Massachusetts 5, No. 2 UMass Lowell 2

After seeing its 7-game win streak snapped the previous night, No. 19 Massachusetts got back on track with a 5-2 win over interstate (and Hockey East) rival UMass Lowell on Saturday at the Mullins Center.

“It was (a) great bounce back from (Friday’s) game where I didn’t think we showed much,” said UMass coach Greg Carvel. “We portrayed this as a playoff game tonight, since we don’t play for two weeks. We wanted to go out feeling good about ourselves in the break and I thought our first period was outstanding.”

Five different players scored for the Minutemen — Owen Murray, Jack Galanek, Justin Kerr, Jack Musa and Lukáš Klečka. Michael Hrabal had 33 saves.

No. 20 Michigan Tech 4. No. 16 Augustana 3

No. 20 Michigan Tech swept No. 16 Augustana with a 4-3 win in CCHA action Saturday night. The Huskies won the MacInnes Trophy in the total-goal series betwixt the two schools and picked up their 20th win of the season.

“It was another good game against a quality opponent,” Michigan Tech coach Bill Muckalt said. “(We) did a really good job getting traffic in front of their goaltender on our chances tonight. These points are huge. We just have to keep taking care of business with four games left.”

Jack Anderson scored the game-winning goal 10:33 into the third period for his second goal of the weekend. Augustana thrice held the lead, but Michigan Tech continued to rally. Matthew Van Blaricom and Luca Fasciano also scored. Owen Bartoszkiewicz made 17 saves for the Huskies and won his nation-leading 20th game of the season.

Josh Kotai stopped 31 shots for Augustana.
