FRIDAY ROUNDUP: Top-ranked Michigan takes down Ohio State

T.J. Hughes scored twice and added an assist for his fourth 3-point game of the year as top-ranked Michigan got a 6-4 winn at rival Ohio State Friday night in B1G action to open up a two-game weekend set in Columbus.

Michael Hage finished the night with three assists for the Wolverines. Max Montes and William Smith each had two assists for Ohio State. 

No. 2 Michigan State 6, No. 5 Penn State 3

A hat trick by Anthony Romani helped lead No. 2 Michigan State to a 6-3 win at No. 5 Penn State in a key B1G battle on Friday night. 

Michigan’s Stephen Peck continued his undefeated collegiate start by setting a new career high with 30 saves. 

Jackson Smith, Reese Laubach and Matt DiMarsico each scored for Penn State in the losing effort. 

No. 3 Western Michigan 5, Omaha 2

Two goals from Liam Valente powered Western Michigan to its 10th straight win, 5-2 over Omaha in NCHC action to kick off a two-game series.

Along with Valente’s goals, Zack Sharp, Jamison Sluys and William Whitelaw also scored for the defending NCAA champs. Hampton Slukynsky continued his hot stretch in net, stopping 28 shots. Grant Slukynsky and Samuel Sjolund each had two assists on the night. 

No. 6 Quinnipiac 7, St. Lawrence 0

Chris Pelosi and Antonin Verreault led for Quinnipiac on Friday night, as the Bobcats kicked off their North Country road trip with a 7-0 romp at St. Lawrence on Friday night. Pelosi finished with two goals and two assists, while Verreault had a goal and a pair of assists. They were two of five Bobcats who chipped in multiple assists, including Logan McCutcheon, who recorded his first two collegiate points.

Markus Vidicek maintained his team lead with 16 goals now on the year after scoring the opening and game-winning goal. 

Matej Marinov stopped 23 shots, recording his second shutout of the season and sixth of his career.

Minnesota 4, No. 8 Wisconsin 1

LJ Mooney, Erik Påhlsson, Brodie Ziemer and Teddy Townsend all scored for Minnesota in a 4-1 home upset over No. 8 Wisconsin in Friday night B1G action. 

Tyson Dyck scored for Wisconsin. Mooney and Påhlsson also added assists for the Golden Gophers.

Minnesota’s Luca Di Pasquo was the winning goalie with 27 saves. The same two teams go at it again on Saturday night. 

No. 10 Cornell 5, Yale 2

Four players registered multi-point nights as 10th-ranked Cornell rolled to a 5-2 win over Ivy League rival Yale in ECAC Hockey action at Ingalls Rink on Friday night.

Jonathan Castagna scored twice, while Jake Kraft added a goal and an assist. Forward Ryan Walsh and Aiden Long each contributed two assists for the Big Red, which has won nine of its last 10.

Cornell dominated possession throughout, outshooting Yale 42-17 while limiting the Bulldogs to seven shots or fewer in each period. Goalie Alexis Cournoyer made 15 saves to earn his 12th win of the season.

Micah Berger and Ronan O’Donnell scored for Yale.

No. 11 Denver 4, No. 7 Minnesota Duluth 3

Minnesota Duluth scored three unanswered goals in the third period, but their rally fell just short as Denver hung on for a 4-3 win at Magness Arena on Friday night in a key NCHC battle.

Kyle Gaffney, Daniel Shlaine and Ty Hanson were responsible for Duluth’s third-period flurry. Denver built its 4-0 lead with goals by Sam Harris, Reid Varkonyl, Kyle Chyzowski and Cale Ashcroft. 

Johnny Hicks had 29 saves for Denver in the win, while Adam Gajan had 18 saves for Duluth. The two-game set concludes Saturday night. 

No. 13 Boston College 4, Boston University 1

No. 13 Boston College jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held on for a 4-1 victory over Hockey East rival Boston University on Friday in the 299th Battle of Comm Ave.

Andre Gasseau, James Hagens, and Dean Letourneau each finished with two points on one goal and one assist, while Brady Berard also scored for the Eagles. Louka Cloutier turned in a 33-save effort to earn the win.

No. 14 Dartmouth 4, Union 2

Four different players scored in No. 14 Dartmouth’s 4-2 home win over Union on Friday night in ECAC Hockey action. 

Nikita Nikora had a 4-point night with a goal and three assists. Jack Silverberg, Colin Grable and Brock Cummings also scored for the Big Green, while Emmet Croteau had 17 saves.

For Union, Lucas Buzziol and Alex Laurenza did the scoring. =

No. 15 St. Thomas 4, No. 19 Michigan Tech 2

Alex Gaffney twice scored to help lift No. 15 St. Thomas to a 4-2 win over CCHA rival No. 19 Michigan Tech on Friday night.

Also scoring for the Tommies was Lucas Van Vilet and Jake Braccini. For Michigan Tech, Joe Prouty and Noah Reinhard scored. 

Michigan Tech’s Own Bartoszkiewicz turned in a night’s work with 40 saves in net. Aaron Trotter for St. Thomas made 20 saves.

No. 16 Augustana 6, Lake Superior State 1

Leonid Bulgakov scored twice to tie the Augustana single-season goal record with 13, and Augustana men’s hockey erupted for four third-period goals to pull away from CCHA rival Lake Superior State, earning a 6-1 victory Friday night at Midco Arena.

Josh Kotai finished with 41 saves to earn the win. The series concludes Saturday night.

No. 18 Minnesota State 6, Ferris State 1

Freshmen contributed four goals to propel No. 18 Minnesota State to a 6-1 win at Ferris State Friday night at Ewigleben Ice Arena in CCHA play. 

Reid Morich led the Mavericks with two goals as Minnesota State scored six goals for the first time this season. Jack Smith won 13 of 18 faceoffs and Mason Wheeler scored his first goal of the year.

Alex Tracy made 10 saves for his 14th win of the season for the Mavericks. Hobie Hedquist finished with 34 saves for Ferris State.

The teams conclude the two-game set on Saturday.

Miami 2, No. 20 St. Cloud State 1

Ethan Hay and John Emmons each scored in a span of just over four minutes in the second period and Miami went on to a 2-1 win at No. 20 St. Cloud State Friday night in an NCHC battle.

Matteo Drobac made 25 saves for the RedHawks, who earned their first road win over a ranked opponent since Nov. 19, 2022. Cooper Wylie scored the only goal for the Huskies.
