Hockey East announced Sunday that Boston University forward Sacha Boisvert and UMass Lowell senior forward Connor Eddy have each been suspended two games, stemming from an incident during the third period of a game between the two teams on Jan. 16, a 4-3 Lowell win in overtime at Agganis Arena.
According to video of the game, Boisvert and Eddy were involved in a brawl at 11:15 of the period. After both were assessed matching minor penalties for roughing at 9:10, both emerged from the box after serving said penalties and appeared to engage each other with helmets off and gloves dropped, the video shows. The brawl appears to last approximately 15 seconds before being broken up by officials, with each player throwing and landing punches.
Both were assessed major game-misconduct penalties and ejected from the game. Neither were in the lineup for the teams’ game Saturday night, a 3-0 BU win at Tsongas Center. Per NCAA rules, fighting results in an automatic minimum one-game suspension.
Boisvert is ineligible to play in a home and home series Jan. 23-24 against Providence and is able to return to the Terriers’ lineup on Jan. 30 at home vs. Boston College. Eddy is ineligible to play the same weekend in a two-game home series vs. Maine and is eligible to return to the River Hawks’ lineup on Feb. 1 vs. Massachusetts.
“What took place on the ice Friday at Agganis Arena was entirely unacceptable and has no place in college hockey,” said Steve Metcalf, Hockey East commissioner, in a statement, before adding that Hockey East will have no further comment on the matter.
